The Orange Story : Interest-Based Negotiation and Communication

Here is a simple story to illustrate the difference between positions and interests.

Once there was an orange and two people who sat together, fighting over this orange.

"I want this orange !"

"No, it's my orange. I want it !"

They both wanted this lovely orange, and were convinced that they just had to have it.

"Hey, I bought this orange!". "I would rather throw it away than give it to you !"

"If you don't give me the orange, I am not going to give you the sandwich that you want!"

Their conversation saddened both of them, but neither would give in. They went on and on. Finally, their stalemate broke when one declared, "There is one fair way to take care of this, you know." The other relented, "Yeah, yeah, I know. Just like Solomon, we can cut it in half."

And so, that's just what they did. A few days later, they ran into each other. After exchanging hellos, one asked, "Hey, why did you want that orange the other day ?"

Surprised by the question, the other responded, "Well, obviously, I wanted it to make some orange juice !"

This wasn't so obvious to the other who exclaimed, "Oh, my goodness ! If only I had known. I only need the rind to make marmalade. We could have both had what we really wanted !"

They both just shook their heads. Being so head-strong had cost them both an opportunity.

Perhaps you can recall making an assumption like this. Ineffective communication often costs us what we really want, and sometimes prevents us from getting what we truly need.

Motivational Speaker: Kelly Swanson Quotes

I came across this great motivational speaker, Kelly Swanson and wanted to share some of her quotes.  Very inspirational!

“It’s a word that’s on my heart these days – Forgiveness. The power of it. The grace in it. The need for it. The gift it gives to those who receive it. The greater gift it gives to those who give it. I marvel that forgiveness is not a standard human emotion – for the heart fights for justice and vengeance.” Kelly Swanson

“I carried the belief into adulthood that to be successful meant to look like everyone else. But I wasn't like everyone else…It turns out that being different isn't such a bad thing. In fact, it's a greatthing. In fact, it's everything. I have learned that it's not blending in that makes you a success, but standing out among the crowd.” Kelly Swanson

“Know that there will be things that go wrong that are beyond your control. Accept that, and go into it from the beginning knowing what's really important. Lower your expectations. I'm not saying to change your plans, just your reaction when things don't go the way you planned.” Kelly Swanson

“You can live your life stiff and proper, obsessed with appearances, measuring the value in others by the degree of china or thread count in a pillow, measuring every step as if all the world were watching and you so desperately don't want to let them see you fall. Or you can live your life desperately happy despite your circumstances - looking for every opportunity to throw out your arms and dance.” Kelly Swanson

“Have you chosen your teammates wisely? Are you surrounded by people who encourage you to be good enough - or are you surrounded by people who encourage you to break a new record? Or, bless your heart, are you just now realizing that you're the only one in the race? The choice is yours. The race has already started. They won't stop and pull you in. You've got to jump in and start running.” Kelly Swanson

“Juggles never stopped being a clown. Day in and day out. It stayed his dream and remained his passion. Even when his hair fell out and he was too weak to honk his nose - even from his bed, when what little fans that were left had to come to him. It was March of 1998 when Juggles died, wearing a big red nose and a contented smile. He never made more than $50 a job.
How do you measure success?

“Making your mark on the world is hard. If it were easy, everybody would do it. But it's not. It takes patience, it takes commitment, and it comes with plenty of failure along the way. The real test is not whether you avoid this failure, because you won't. it's whether you let it harden or shame you into inaction, or whether you learn from it; whether you choose to persevere.” Barack Obama

“…it's only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you realize your true potential.” Barack Obama

““All of us - we should do everything we can to make sure this country lives up to our children's expectations.” Barack Obama

“Don't let your failures define you.” Barack Obama

“We now live in a world where the most valuable skill you can sell is knowledge.” Barack Obama

Gandhi Jayanti Quotes

A short story on Gandhi Jayanti :

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869.

The son of a senior government official, Gandhi was born and raised in a Hindu Bania community in coastal Gujarat, and trained in law in London. Gandhi became famous by fighting for the civil rights of Muslim and Hindu Indians in South Africa, using the new techniques of non-violent civil disobedience that he developed.

Returning to India in 1915, he set about organising peasants to protest excessive land-taxes. A lifelong opponent of "communalism" (i.e. basing politics on religion) he reached out widely to all religious groups.

He became a leader of Muslims protesting the declining status of the Caliphate. Assuming leadership of the Indian National Congress in 1921, Gandhi led nationwide campaigns for easing poverty, expanding women's rights, building religious and ethnic amity, ending untouchability, increasing economic self-reliance, and above all for achieving Swaraj—the independence of India from British domination.

Josephine Hart

"Poetry has never let me down. Without poetry, I would have found life less comprehensible, less bearable and infinitely less enjoyable."

— Josephine Hart

Irish Novelist, Writer

Commentary

Reading is a habit that many of us cultivated at a very young age.  And most of us would admit that reading has helped us through some difficult times in our lives.  What do you read?  Poetry?  Novels?  Biographies?  History?  Memoirs?  Reading has brought me much comfort during my life.  Without reading I would have been a much different person.  Reading has opened my heart and shown me many worlds.  I remember once while I was in college of going to a restaurant late at night and reading poetry aloud for the shocked customers.

Creative Practice

Read aloud  one of your favorite poems for family and friends to hear.
